Work with us! Community Illustrator (Commission)

About us

Romano Lav is a grassroots anti-racist community organisation and registered charity based in Govanhill, Glasgow. We work with and for local Roma communities to challenge racism, discrimination, and disadvantage in Glasgow. Our work is diverse but united by a common objective of empowering Roma people, and Roma youth and Roma women, in particular.

The commission

We are looking to commission an illustrator to create  vignette illustrations for a community storytelling project. Romano Lav, in partnership with Annette Street Primary School, will work with children and their families to collect traditional tales from Central and Eastern Europe. We will collect these cherished stories in an accessible multilingual storybook that celebrates the vibrant oral storytelling tradition of Scottish and European Roma families. The illustrations will accompany traditional fairy tales to bring these stories to life and will feature in a small book of stories distributed to pupils and to Glasgow libraries. The illustrations will also be used on our website and across our social media platforms. The ideal candidate will be able to undertake a small mentorship role to mentor a young Roma person with a passion for art to create their own illustration for the book.

Fee & Contract

The fee is £2000 for the project, with a minimum of 12  illustrations required. Final number to be agreed upon by illustrator and Romano Lav in relation to what/how many stories will be featured. The contract will be freelance; the contract and completion date will be discussed with the successful candidate before the work begins. You should have access to your own tools and any software needed for the job.

Accessibility

This opportunity is open to all. As an organisation that works to promote diversity, inclusion, and empowerment, we especially welcome applications from illustrators from underrepresented backgrounds. Romani illustrators are especially encouraged to apply!

If you are interested but feel you have specific barriers to applying, please let us know so we can discuss how we can address these.

We would prefer that the illustrator be based in Glasgow or within a commutable distance to engage with the pupils and their families in person. However, in exceptional circumstances, remote work may be possible for the right candidate.
