“Carmen Amaya: Queen of the Gypsies, a documentary by Jocelyn Ajami”

2004 1hr 20mins

“A feature length biography of the greatest Roma  performer to bring the Art of Flamenco to the international stage. This is the most comprehensive video history on the life and art of Carmen Amaya. This biographical portrait has compiled the most complete number of dance clips ever seen of this phenomenal artist. Interviews with family members, scholars, friends and former company members give Amaya's spectacular virtuosity a personal dimension, along with countless vintage photographs. With original music by Carmen Amaya, Sabicas and Domingo Alvarado.”

The film can be watched on the big TV in the comfort of the Romano Kher.

“Carmen Amaya is hail on a windowpane, a swallow’s cry, a black cigar smoked by a dreamer, thunderous applause; when she and her family sweep into town, they cause ugliness, torpor and gloom to evaporate just as a swarm of insects strips the trees of their leaves.”

Jean Cocteau (1889–1963)

Poster by Marie Balogova

Jsem obyčejná žena s genetickou oční vadou, ale i přesto -

nebo právě proto - maluji.

Moje obrazy jsou abstraktní, svaté a romské.

V každém z nich je kus mé víry,

identity a vnitřního svéta.

Tvorba je pro mě způsob, jak překračovat hranice a

dávat tvar tomu, co cítím, ale slovy neřeknu.

I am an ordinary woman with a genetic eye defect, but

despite this - or because of it - I paint.

My paintings are abstract, holy and Romani.

In each of them there is a piece of my faith,

identity and inner world.

For me, creation is a way to cross boundaries

and give shape to what I feel,

but cannot express in words.
